Turku

Take a chance on Turku!

Turku is home to highly competitive companies in many different sectors, including but not limited to the maritime, medical, bio, and ICT industries. Turku also supports startup companies in many ways. Furthermore, the area has a strong history in academia and research, with more than 40,000 students studying in six different universities each year. Notably, 99 percent of students recommend Turku as a place to study (Student city Turku survey 2018)!

Turku was also the first official capital of autonomous Finland, although only for 3 years. Prior to Finland's autonomy, Turku has long served as the unofficial capital of the eastern part of Sweden.

Alongside universities, Turku offers good daycare services and primary and secondary education possibilities. The city’s schools have many specialized classes and education is also available in Swedish. The city also has diverse health and social welfare services and a central university hospital, TYKS.

A historical city remaking itself

Turku is rapidly renewing itself. The new market square was completed in 2022, and some of the current large projects include the development of an experience center in the railyard area next to the Logomo event center, the Science park project in the Kupittaa area, and the development of the new Skanssi neighborhood.

Many neighborhoods have various local suburb improvement projects going on as well. Turkuseura is an active association in the area that takes part and provides input into current affairs and development projects. Turkuseura consists of resident associations from several parts of the city.

In terms of transportation solutions, the development of railways, superbus networks, and a 1-hour train to Helsinki are under discussion. Turku and the surrounding municipalities have a comprehensive public transport network called Föli. Turku also actively promotes the use of light transport. Turku has an airport, ship routes to Maarianhamina and Stockholm as well as three railway stations (the Turku main railway station and the railway stations in Kupittaa and Turku harbor).
