The Eastern Center of Turku is just a couple of blocks away from the Marketplace (Kauppatori). The area holds many historical buildings, including Turku Cathedral (Turun Tuomiokirkko). The Turku University Hospital (TYKS), the University of Turku and the Swedish university Åbo Akademi are also in the area.

The University Hill is full of historical buildings belonging to the Åbo Akademi and traditional wooden houses. In Hämeenkatu, there are various apartment buildings. A former barrack area of Sirkkala has apartment buildings from different decades, from the 1840s to the 2000s.
