The sparsely populated area of Kemiönsaari is lush and full of wonderful settlements near the sea and in archipelago villages, with a long history. Kemiönsaari is known for its agriculture, and its landscape is characterized by cereal and sugar beet fields with a blue sea in the background. In addition to traditional farming, Kemiönsaari has a growing presence in organic farming and the production of artisanal food. In Kemiönsaari's direct sales facilities and gardens, you can buy fresh vegetables and local food products directly from the field!
Roads in the area often lead to small villages with a long history, often with a strong identity and a vibrant village community. For example, the village of Kiila in the northern part of Kemiönsaari has been inhabited since the 16th century, and the village still has a well-preserved group village environment with a building stock dating back to the turn of the 20th century. The village of Kiila has been defined as a nationally significant built cultural environment. The village of Kiila also has a fairytale-like Westers Garden which offers the magic and flowers of the garden. Kiila is just about 15 minutes away from the services of the city center of Kemiö, and from there you can also easily reach the mainland with the Kokkila ferry in Salo.
In addition to Kiili, Kemiö also has other village communities with a long history, such as Björkboda, Nivelax and Vestlax. In the late 19th century, successful manufacture of locks began in Björkboda, the stages of which are described in the lock museum in the area. There are beautiful buildings in Björkboda, such as the beautiful red building of Kulturhuset, which used to be a school.
The Västanfjärd Village Association won the 2021 Landscape Competition by renovating Nivelax Beach on Lake Björkboda, which was restored by the inhabitants of the villages of Björkboda and Nivelax. Here you will also find a magnificent shed, built with voluntary work. There you can sit and enjoy the scenery all year round.
Vestlax has previously had a variety of industries, such as limestone quarrying; lime has been mined in the area since the 16th century. Today Vestlax is a peaceful area, surrounded by farmland and the sea, where you can follow the change of seasons in your own peace. At the same time, Västanfjärd’s idyllic Swedish-speaking village school and the city center of Kemiö are only about a 15-minute drive away.
