Rosala-Hitis

Kimitoön

Kemiönsaari’s outer archipelago offers amazing experiences and a lot to see for travelers, but life in the embrace of the Archipelago Sea is also commonplace for year-round residents. The location of the islands and the impressive nature guarantees a unique living environment.

Life in archipelago

Rosala and Hiittinen are one of Finland's southernmost permanently inhabited islands. However, it is easy for residents to travel to the islands by their own cars, thanks to the excellent ferry connections from Kasnäs. Hitis-Rosala Primary School offers education in Swedish in Rosala. The distance to the nearest junior high school, Taalintehdas, is about 30 km and 50 km to the Swedish upper secondary school in the center of Kemiö. Both Taalintehdas and the center of Kemiö offer free school transport for 1st-9th graders. After all, Hiittinen has been a stopping place for the Vikings and the only runestone piece in Finland was also found there!

Rosala and Hiitti are surrounded by the Archipelago Sea National Park, which can be explored on your boat, on guided trips, or the Örö Island Nature Trail, for example. The maze islands and their rich nature offer an opportunity for a real adventure for locals who can enjoy the sea in the summer by boating and paddling. In winter, if the weather is suitable, you can try ice skating or jump on the ferry to Kasnäs Spa to enjoy the heated outdoor hot tubs.

Kasnäs

Kasnäs, a major tourist center, is located at the southern tip of Kemiönsaari, about a 20-minute drive from Taalintehdas. Important ferry connections to the top destinations of the Archipelago Sea’s National Park, such as Bengtskär Lighthouse and Örö Island, leave from Kasnäs Harbor. The daily ferry to Rosala and Hiitti leaves from Kasnäs.

Kasnäs is not only a hub for those traveling to the outer archipelago but it is also a popular destination for tourists. In addition to the hotel and spa, Kasnäs has restaurants, a guest marina, a camping site, a nature trail and a swimming beach. The services and convenience store at the Niemenkärki of Kasnäs also serve year-round locals.
