Halinen has a magnificent countryside landscape, yet located relatively close to the center of Turku. The majority of residents can reach the woods or the banks of the River Aura right from their doorsteps.

Halinen is mostly a low-rise district filled with rural landscapes and forests. It is located only four kilometers from the center of Turku and has good bus connections. the center can also be reached by walking or cycling along the lovely riverside. Halinen is a multicultural neighborhood and popular amongst students.

Halinen has both an area of detached and terraced houses, as well as several inexpensive apartment building blocks. The city of Turku owns the majority of the rental apartments and the Student Village Foundation (TYS) owns and operates student housing. The public and private sector services are good, including a school, a grocery store, and a parish. In Halinen, there is an active residential association, Halinen-Räntämäki Ry, whose aim is to promote the sense of community among residents, good living environment and atmosphere.

One of the most popular places in Halinen is Halistenkoski (Halinen Rapids), where you can find the dam, a summer café, and it is possible to go kayaking in the River Aura. It is also a popular place for fishing. Without a permit, you may fish with a rod and line, and through an opening in the ice during wintertime. Next to Halistenkoski, there is a historically significant village called Halisten kylämäki, which has been continuously inhabited since the Iron Age and whose buildings are mainly from the 19th and 20th century.
