The River Aura (Aurajoki) divides Turku and the city center into north and south. The Northern Center is home to various well-known locales such as Marketplace (Kauppatori), traditional Market Hall (Kauppahalli), Turku Main Library (Turun pääkirjasto), Turku Concert Hall (Turun konserttitalo), and Turku Art Museum (Turun taidemuseo). Restaurants, in particular, have gained a great reputation across Finland. The center is the hub for public transport (Föli) and connections to other parts of Turku and neighboring municipalities are excellent.
Living costs in the Northern Center of Turku are naturally amongst the highest, yet in exchange, you get to live in the center of everything. The area offers renovated old stone buildings, compact 70's apartment buildings, or modern complexes. In contrast, in the northeastern corner of the area is a neighborhood called Lonttinen, full of idyllic and protected wooden houses.
The Northern Center, like the rest of Turku, is playfully divided into those living on 'this side of the river' (southern side) and those living on 'that side of the river' (northern side). The northern side has a residents' association called Toispual Jokke ry, which means ''that side of the river'' in Turku dialect.
