Turku

Ruissalo is a unique island relatively close to the center of Turku. It has several historical residential buildings, yet it is a popular recreational area for many citizens.

Ruissalo is an island just outside of mainland Turku and it represents a unique and valuable area naturally, historically and culturally. The district of Ruissalo also includes smaller islands, like Iso-Pukki and Pikku-Pukki. It is located only six kilometers from the center of Turku and the island itself is seven kilometers long. Ruissalo can be easily reached by bus.

Ruissalo is a popular destination to go cycling, hiking, and sailing. Ruissalo is, for the most part, a nature reserve, that offers its few residents and many visitors plenty of outdoor activities. There are a variety of nature tracks, fields, gardens, 19th-century villas, birdwatching spots, oak forests, and beaches.

There are a few residential houses in Ruissalo. Most of them are villas dating back to the 1800s or 1900s. Many of the villas have been renovated for the use of tourism or restaurant services. Additionally, there is a campsite right by the sea at the tip of Saaronniemi. Other things you can find in Ruissalo are the Aura Golf Course, the Ruissalo Spa and the University of Turku Botanical Gardens. In addition, it acts as a venue for one of the biggest music festivals in Finland, Ruisrock.

Ruissalo’s own association Ruissaloyhdistys ry is operating in the area. It aims to preserve the island's cultural history, protect the island's nature and historical buildings as well as increase knowledge about Ruissalo.
