Turku

Skanssi is a new modern neighborhood in southern Turku. The area is under development and the new apartment buildings are rising next door to the Skanssi shopping mall.

Skanssi is currently a developing area, best known for its shopping center Skanssi and multiple other services nearby. Skanssi is located about 6 kilometers southeast from the center of Turku and is sharing its border with the city of Kaarina. The highway of Helsinki (Helsingin valtatie) runs along the eastern border of the neighborhood and due to the multiple services, there are excellent public transport connections.

There are already various newly built apartment buildings in the neighborhood, yet a great amount of surface area is still to be developed. Construction processes follow ecologically friendly, energy-efficient and community-based building trends. There will be an interesting mix of modern and unique apartment buildings, row houses and loft apartments in the area. Even though the area is developing and located close to one of the main roads, a great amount of its surface is still covered with fields and forests.

In addition to new housing options, green space planning and recreational activities are an important part of the development of Skanssi. There are also plans to introduce the concept of shared cars in some of the blocks. Majority of public services such as schools and health care services are located in the neighboring areas. The area belongs to a Skanssi-Uittamo subregion and they have a Facebook group to discuss different issues and ideas for the development of the area.
