Piikkiö used to be its own municipality until 2009, when it got merged with Kaarina . It is one of the oldest perishes in Finland since the Middle Ages, hence there are many historic tombs and castle hills in the area around Piikkiö. The rich history is still evident in Piikkiö's building stock and surrounding nature. Among the historical sites of Piikkiö, Piikkiö Church, Piikkiö Parsonage and the King's Road are nationally significant cultural sites.
Piikkiö is located about 8 kilometers from the center of Kaarina and due to the direct connections it takes only 10 minutes by car. The center of Turku is about twenty minutes away from Piikkiö. The center of Piikkiö is also accessible by bus. The connection to Helsinki is convenient as the Helsinki highway runs north of Piikkiö city center and the old Helsingintie goes through Piikkiö city center. The industrial area of Pukkila is located in the northwestern part of Piikkiö.
The center of Piikkiö is a cozy park-like area with a relatively low population density. In addition to single-family housing, there are low-rise blocks of flats in the center. It is not necessary for the residents of Piikkiö to go to other centers for services as the area offers a wide range of services such as Piikkiö comprehensive school, kindergartens, elderly services, health center, sports hall and many private service providers. There is also the Piikkiö-Seura association, which promotes regional development and the sense of community.
