Lemunniemi

Lemunniemi is located in the west part of Kaarina, bordering Turku. The distance to the center of Kaarina is at most six kilometers and to the Turku city center a bit more. Apart from the border areas, a bus runs in the neighborhood during the day. The nearest services are located north of the neighborhood in Piispanristi and in the Kaarina city center. There are banquet and conference facilities at Ala-Lemu manor in Lemunniemi.

Lemunniemi is so far a low-density area with individual houses with large yards and a few mansions. Otherwise, the area consists mainly of forests, fields and beaches. There are also a few nature reserves in Lemunniemi, the best known of which is Rauvolanlahti. Long nature trails begin in the protected area and Vaarniemi bird tower can be found near the sea. Most of the areas in Lemunniemi are zoned as Kaarina’s recreational areas. Construction of the future Torppala ecovillage is planned in the area.

Lemunniemi also has an interesting history, as there were battles here in 1808, which inspired a poem by Runeberg in the stories of Vänrikki Stool. Earlier in the 16th century, the Duke of Sweden-Finland landed his forces in Rauvolanlahti against Turku’s nobility. Lemunniemi has been inhabited since the time of this event. There are historic tombs and other historically significant sites in the area.
