Littoinen

Kaarina

On the shores of Littoinen lake there is a popular neighbourhood called Littoinen, which grew up around an 18th century broadcloth factory. The Littoinen area is a nationally important cultural site. Its western part belongs to Kaarina, and its eastern part to Lieto.

The Littoinen lake area is one of the most popular nature destinations and sought-after neighborhoods in the Turku region. Among other reasons, Littoinen area is interesting because both the lake and the neighborhood are divided between two municipalities: Kaarina and Lieto. Kaarina’s Littoinen is bordered to the north by Littoinen lake and Aura Valley, to the west by Turku, to the east by Lieto and to the south by the Helsinki highway. In recent years, Littoinen lake has even attracted the attention of international media, as the lake has been chemically cleaned from eutrophication.

You can quickly reach nearby city centers from Littoinen: it is 5 kilometers to Kaarina city center, and about 15 min drive to the center of Turku. Both city centers are accessible by public transport. The neighborhood has good basic services, such as a primary school, a daycare, a community center and a health center.

The buildings in Littoinen consist of detached and row houses that have been built over several decades. The area is a dream destination for nature lovers, as residents of the area can enjoy the scenic lakeshore and nature trails virtually on their doorstep. Littoinen lake is a popular place for swimming both in summer and winter, as it has sandy beaches and an ice-swimming area at Villa Järvelä. Skiing and ice skating trails are sometimes available on Littoinen lake when winter conditions allow it.
