Raunistula is a pleasant and idyllic neighborhood loved by its residents along the River Aura. The area extends to Koroinen, which is a historically significant and culturally active small village. Raunistula is located within a few kilometers from the city center in the northeast. The main bus station of Turku is located almost next door and the area has excellent public transport connections. In addition, highways towards Helsinki and Tampere run close by.
Raunistula consists mainly of wooden detached houses and terraced houses with lush gardens. In addition, there are new apartment buildings along the river, called Barker area, with magnificent views towards the riverside. The old industrial buildings in the area have been renovated for new use; for example, in the old Barker weaving building operates the Barker Theater as a stage for independent art. People of different ages and backgrounds live side by side in Raunistula although the living costs in the area are rather high due to its great location and newly built apartments.
The beautiful natural area around the River Aura is in active recreational use. Joggers can admire the lush old trees, green fields, old red brick factory buildings and small red houses of the Koroinen village. The Koroinen peninsula is an ancient trading region, and in the 13th century the area became the spiritual center, when the episcopal seat was moved there. Due to its long and important history, the area has many ancient ruins. Read more about Koroinen peninsula.
Sevices can be found within walking distance either from the city center or from malls of Prisma and Lidl in the neighborhood of Kaerla. Raunistula is home to the oldest residents’ association in Finland, Raunistulan asuinkiinteistöyhdistys ry, which aims to promote the small house living in the area and interests of the residents. Koroinen has also its own association, Elävän kulttuurin Koroinen ry promoting multiculturalism and sustainable values.
